Great implementation of a print magazine
So far, there are only a few magazines in the App store that really work for me. Wired Magazine is one of them. Der Spiegel is another and it does a good job at mirroring the print magazine while allowing for implementation of additional story-telling mediums. The format may not please everyone because its format is derived from print but Der Spiegel is not an entertainment-digital-lifestyle-fashion magazine first and foremost: You buy it to read the articles and expect decent quality journalism, which it lives up to. They even manage to breach the "iron curtain of Apple" with regards to "nudity" and political commentary. Youll see the occasional naked breast(s) with regards to German life and sexuality articles. Has Apple finally come to their senses with regards to what can and cant be shown on the iPad?
If you read the print version, youll enjoy all the new features that Der Spiegel for the iPad offers. Subscriptions run through the application with direct debiting of your German bank account (Bankeinzug), credit card or billing by mail. The one potential catch: If you sign up through the app for the test subscription, youll have to decide whether to continue after the 9th issue (11 issues are offered at 29 Euro). Issues after the test subscription are billed at 3.65 Euro a piece.
